BEFORE YOU START
A Few Things to Know About This Itinerary
This itinerary is designed for a first winter trip to Rovaniemi — with enough time to experience the classics, venture deeper into Lapland and still have moments where nothing is scheduled.
WHO IT'S FORFirst-Time Visitors
Perfect if Rovaniemi is your main Lapland destination and you want to experience much more than the basic highlights.
THE PACEAdventurous, But Balanced
Big wilderness days alternate with shorter experiences, slower mornings and deliberately free time.
GETTING AROUNDNo Car Required
You can follow this itinerary without renting a car by using local transport, guided excursions and included transfers.
DAY 1
Arctic Circle, Reindeer & Your First Taste of Lapland
Start with the Rovaniemi classics, meet Lapland’s most famous animals and end your first day the Finnish way.

MORNING
Start at Santa Claus Village
Your First Arctic Circle Moment
2–3 h · Arctic Circle · Santa Claus Village
Begin your first morning at Santa Claus Village and cross the Arctic Circle. Yes, it’s touristy — but on a first trip to Rovaniemi, we still think it belongs on the itinerary.
Walk around the village, take your Arctic Circle photo, visit Santa Claus and send a postcard from the official Santa Claus Main Post Office. Give yourself time to explore, but you don’t need to spend your entire day here.
Our tip: Around two to three hours is plenty for most visitors.

AFTERNOON
Meet the Reindeer
A Classic Lapland Experience
3 h · reindeer farm · 2 km sleigh ride
After the Christmas atmosphere of Santa Claus Village, spend the afternoon experiencing something much more closely connected to life in Lapland: reindeer.
For a first trip, we’d choose a proper reindeer farm experience rather than just the shortest possible sleigh ride. You’ll have more time with the animals, learn about reindeer and local life, and still get that classic ride through the snowy landscape.
✓ Visit a local reindeer farm
✓ Proper 2 km sleigh ride
✓ A classic first-day Lapland experience
Our pick: Local Reindeer Farm + 2 km Sleigh Ride

EVENING
Slow Down with a Finnish Sauna
End Your First Day the Finnish Way
sauna · dinner · slow evening
Don’t schedule another major activity for your first evening. After traveling and spending most of the day outside, this is the perfect time to slow down.
If your accommodation has a sauna, use it. Have dinner, warm up and get an early night. Tomorrow is one of the biggest days of the itinerary.
Our tip: Save the full sauna and ice-swimming experience for Day 5 — tonight is simply about arriving.
DAY 1 AT A GLANCEArctic Circle & Reindeer
Morning: Santa Claus Village · Afternoon: Reindeer · Evening: Sauna · Pace: Easy–Medium

DAY 2
Huskies, Rovaniemi & the Northern Lights
Start behind a team of huskies, leave yourself time to recharge and head back into the Arctic night in search of the Northern Lights.

MORNING
Go Dog Sledding Through Lapland
Our Favorite Husky Experience
2 h 15 min · 5 km ride · Arctic wilderness
If there’s one activity we wouldn’t skip on a first winter trip to Rovaniemi, it’s a proper husky safari.
Choose a tour with enough actual time on the trail rather than simply looking at the total duration. A very short ride gives you a taste of dog sledding, but a longer route feels much more like a real journey through the snowy landscape.
✓ Proper 5 km husky adventure
✓ Beautiful Lapland wilderness
✓ Enough time to really experience dog sledding
Our pick: Bearhill’s 5 km Husky Adventure

AFTERNOON
Explore Rovaniemi — and Take a Break
Leave Some Space in Your Itinerary
lunch · city centre · Arktikum · downtime
Resist the temptation to squeeze another major excursion into the afternoon. Tonight could be a long one.
Head back into Rovaniemi for lunch, wander around the city centre or visit Arktikum if you want to learn more about Arctic life and northern nature.
Most importantly, give yourself some downtime. Have a coffee, warm up at your accommodation or even take a nap before heading out again in the evening.
Our tip: Aurora tours can run late. A deliberately quiet afternoon makes the whole day much more enjoyable.

EVENING
Hunt for the Northern Lights
Your Big Arctic Night
small group · flexible route · serious Aurora hunt
Tonight is your first dedicated Northern Lights night. Rather than choosing a tour that stays close to Rovaniemi, we recommend a proper Aurora hunt that can travel in search of clearer skies.
No tour can control nature, but a good guide can use weather forecasts, cloud maps and local knowledge to give you a better chance of being in the right place at the right time.
✓ Small-group experience
✓ Flexibility to travel for clearer skies
✓ A dedicated night for Aurora hunting
Our pick: Small-Group Northern Lights Hunt
DAY 2 AT A GLANCEHuskies & Northern Lights
Morning: Husky safari · Afternoon: Rovaniemi & downtime · Evening: Aurora hunt · Pace: Medium–Full

DAY 3
One Big Arctic Adventure
After a potentially late Aurora night, start slowly — then swap animal power for horsepower and head into the snowy wilderness.

MORNING
Start the Day Slowly
A Morning Without an Alarm
slow breakfast · free time · recharge
If your Northern Lights hunt ran late, don’t book anything for first thing in the morning.
Have a slow breakfast, enjoy your accommodation and give yourself time to recover. With a full week in Rovaniemi, there is absolutely no reason to fill every available hour.
Our tip: The slower moments are part of the itinerary — not gaps in it.

MAIN EXPERIENCE
Explore Lapland by Snowmobile
A Completely Different Way to See Lapland
3 h · snowmobile safari · Arctic wilderness
Now it’s time to swap animal power for horsepower and explore the snowy wilderness by snowmobile.
It feels completely different from huskies and reindeer: faster, more adventurous and a brilliant way to cover much more of the winter landscape.
A classic three-hour safari gives you a proper snowmobile experience while still leaving enough space in the day to recover from the previous night.
✓ Classic Arctic snowmobile safari
✓ Explore more of the winter landscape
✓ Plenty of adventure without taking the whole day
Our pick: Arctic Snowmobile Safari

EVENING
Keep the Evening Free
Dinner, Snow & Maybe Another Aurora
free evening · dinner · bonus Northern Lights chance
After your snowmobile adventure, leave the rest of the day open. Have a good dinner, wander through Rovaniemi or simply enjoy your accommodation.
And keep an eye on the sky. One of the biggest advantages of staying for a full week is that your Northern Lights hopes don’t have to depend on a single evening.
Our tip: If Day 2 was cloudy and tonight looks clear, use this as your second Aurora chance.
DAY 3 AT A GLANCEArctic Adventure
Morning: Slow start · Afternoon: Snowmobile safari · Evening: Free time & open sky · Pace: Easy–Medium

DAY 4
Frozen Waterfalls & Wild Lapland
Leave Rovaniemi behind for the day and discover one of the most dramatic winter landscapes in Finnish Lapland.

FULL-DAY ADVENTURE
Discover the Frozen Waterfalls of Korouoma
Our Favorite Day Trip from Rovaniemi
7 h · frozen waterfalls · Arctic canyon · BBQ
Korouoma Canyon is one of the most spectacular winter day trips you can take from Rovaniemi, known for its huge frozen waterfalls, snowy forest and dramatic scenery.
With a full week in Lapland, you have time to leave the city and dedicate an entire day to the landscape itself. It’s a completely different experience from the animal and activity-based adventures of your first few days.
✓ Dramatic frozen waterfalls
✓ Full day surrounded by Arctic nature
✓ One of our favorite escapes from Rovaniemi
Our pick: Korouoma Frozen Waterfalls + BBQ

EVENING
Warm Up & Do Absolutely Nothing
You’ve Earned a Slow Evening
dinner · sauna · rest
After a full day outside at Korouoma, we wouldn’t plan anything else.
Head back to Rovaniemi, have dinner somewhere warm and enjoy your sauna if you have one. This is one of those evenings where doing less makes the itinerary better.
Our tip: Keep this evening genuinely free. Tomorrow is deliberately slower too.
DAY 4 AT A GLANCEFrozen Waterfalls
Day: Korouoma frozen waterfalls · Evening: Dinner & rest · Pace: Full

DAY 5
Ice Fishing, Sauna & Slow Lapland
After your wilderness day, slow everything down with two very Finnish winter experiences and plenty of free time in between.

MORNING
Try Ice Fishing on a Frozen Lake
A Quieter Side of Arctic Life
frozen lake · local tradition · slow winter experience
After huskies, snowmobiles and a full wilderness day, ice fishing shows you a completely different side of winter in Lapland.
There’s no speed and no big adrenaline moment. Instead, you head onto a frozen lake, learn how to fish through the ice and experience the kind of silence that makes Arctic winter feel so different from almost anywhere else.
✓ Traditional Lapland winter activity
✓ Peaceful contrast to the bigger adventures
✓ Perfect fit for a slower day
Our pick: Traditional Ice Fishing Experience

AFTERNOON
Leave Some Time Unplanned
A Few Hours With Nowhere to Be
lunch · coffee · shopping · free time
Have lunch, wander through Rovaniemi, go back somewhere you enjoyed earlier in the week or simply spend a few hours at your accommodation.
A seven-day itinerary doesn’t need seven days packed with activities. Having nowhere you need to be for a few hours is one of the luxuries of staying longer.
Our tip: Don’t automatically fill this space. See what you feel like doing once you’re there.

EVENING
Experience Sauna & Ice Swimming
A Proper Finnish Evening
1.5 h · traditional sauna · Arctic ice swimming
Tonight, turn the sauna from something you do at your accommodation into a proper Finnish winter experience.
Warm up in a traditional sauna and, if you’re feeling brave, step outside for an icy plunge. The contrast between intense heat and Arctic cold is one of those experiences that sounds slightly ridiculous until you try it.
✓ Traditional Finnish sauna
✓ Optional ice swimming
✓ Perfect after several active days outside
Our pick: Traditional Finnish Sauna & Ice Swimming
DAY 5 AT A GLANCESlow Lapland
Morning: Ice fishing · Afternoon: Free time · Evening: Sauna & ice swimming · Pace: Easy

DAY 6
Snow Monsters & Riisitunturi National Park
Head into the wilderness again — this time for one of Finnish Lapland’s most surreal winter landscapes.

FULL-DAY ADVENTURE
Walk Among the Snow Monsters of Riisitunturi
A Winter Landscape That Barely Looks Real
8 h · national park · snow-covered trees · Arctic wilderness
Riisitunturi National Park is famous in winter for its heavily snow-covered spruce trees — the strange white shapes often called Lapland’s “snow monsters.”
After Korouoma’s cliffs and frozen waterfalls, Riisitunturi shows you another side of Arctic nature: rolling fells, endless snowy forest and trees transformed by layers of snow and ice.
It’s another full day, but with a week in Rovaniemi we think there’s room for both. They’re visually and experientially different enough that Day 6 doesn’t feel like a repeat of Korouoma.
✓ Famous snow-covered trees
✓ Beautiful national park scenery
✓ A second, completely different wilderness day
Our pick: Riisitunturi National Park & Snow Monsters

EVENING
One More Chance for the Northern Lights
Keep an Eye on the Forecast
free evening · Aurora opportunity · no fixed plans
After another full wilderness day, we wouldn’t automatically book a second Northern Lights tour. But we would check the forecast.
If the sky is clear and Aurora conditions look promising, head outside somewhere dark or make this your backup night if you weren’t lucky earlier in the week. Otherwise, have dinner and call it a day.
Our tip: A week in Rovaniemi gives you something a short trip can’t — the freedom to wait for a better night.
DAY 6 AT A GLANCESnow Monsters
Day: Riisitunturi National Park · Evening: Free time & Aurora opportunity · Pace: Full

DAY 7
One Last Lapland Adventure
Finish your week on skis, leave the afternoon open and give yourself time to actually say goodbye to Lapland.

MORNING
Try Cross-Country Skiing
Experience Winter the Finnish Way
3 h · cross-country skiing · snowy nature
For your final active experience, slow the pace down again and try one of Finland’s most traditional ways of moving through winter: cross-country skiing.
You don’t need to be an experienced skier. A guided beginner-friendly experience lets you learn the basics and then glide through the snowy landscape under your own power.
After snowmobiles, huskies and guided wilderness trips, there’s something especially satisfying about moving quietly through Lapland on skis.
✓ Beginner-friendly winter activity
✓ Active without being another adrenaline tour
✓ A beautiful way to spend your final morning
Our pick: Cross-Country Skiing Adventure

AFTERNOON
Do Whatever You Still Want to Do
Your Trip, Your Last Few Hours
favorite places · souvenirs · coffee · absolutely nothing
Keep your final afternoon completely open.
Maybe there’s a café you want to return to, something you still want to buy, a place you want to see again or simply a snowy walk you didn’t have time for earlier. And if you’re ready to do absolutely nothing, that works too.
After a full week, you don’t need another attraction just because there’s space on the itinerary.
Our tip: Don’t decide what to do with this afternoon until you’re actually in Rovaniemi.

EVENING
Have One Last Lapland Evening
No Tour. No Schedule. Just Lapland.
final dinner · sauna · snowy night
For your last evening, leave the itinerary behind.
Have a good dinner, take one final sauna, walk outside in the snow and look up at the sky. If the Northern Lights decide to appear, even better.
Seven days give you time to do a lot in Rovaniemi. Your final evening doesn’t need to add anything else.
DAY 7 AT A GLANCEOne Last Lapland Day
Morning: Cross-country skiing · Afternoon: Free time · Evening: Final dinner & sauna · Pace: Easy

Do You Need a Car for 7 Days in Rovaniemi?
No — even with a full week and two wilderness day trips, you can follow this itinerary without renting a car.
WITHOUT A CAR
Let the Tours Handle the Long Distances
Local transport + guided tours + transfers
Many guided activities include transfers or use convenient meeting points, while Santa Claus Village can be reached from Rovaniemi without your own vehicle. Longer excursions to places such as Korouoma and Riisitunturi are particularly easy as guided day trips because the transport is already part of the experience.
A rental car becomes more useful on a week-long stay if you want to explore independently, chase your own spontaneous plans or stay outside the city. But it still isn’t necessary for the itinerary we’ve created here.
✓ No winter driving required
✓ Guided tours handle the longest journeys
✓ City, activities and wilderness can all be combined
Best for: First-time visitors who want a full Lapland week without Arctic driving

FAQ
7 Days in Rovaniemi: Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you might want to know before spending a full winter week in Finnish Lapland.
Is 7 days too long in Rovaniemi?
No. If Rovaniemi is your main Lapland destination, a full week gives you time to experience the classic winter activities, take day trips into the surrounding wilderness and still have slower mornings and free afternoons. The key is not filling every day with multiple tours.
How many nights do you need for 7 days in Rovaniemi?
We’d ideally stay eight nights for seven full days in Rovaniemi. Arriving the evening before Day 1 and leaving after Day 7 means your travel days don’t take away from the itinerary.
Is 5 or 7 days better for Rovaniemi?
Five days are enough for the major Rovaniemi highlights and one wilderness day trip. Seven days are better if you want a slower pace, more Arctic nature and time for additional experiences such as Riisitunturi and cross-country skiing. If your schedule and budget allow it, a week gives you much more flexibility.
Do you need a car for a week in Rovaniemi?
No. You can follow this itinerary without renting a car by combining local transport with guided tours and transfers. A car becomes more useful if you want to explore independently or stay far outside the city, but it isn’t essential.
What is the best month for a week in Rovaniemi?
December is best for Christmas atmosphere, while January and February usually offer deep winter conditions without the peak Christmas rush. March brings significantly more daylight while still offering excellent winter activities in most years.
Are 7 days better for seeing the Northern Lights?
A longer stay gives you more opportunities, but the Northern Lights are never guaranteed. With seven days, you can plan one dedicated Aurora hunt and then watch the weather across several additional evenings rather than relying on a single night.
